Ancestral Soul at Solstice Part III

road-homeOur ancestral soul at Solstice time is geared for extra holiday joy but sometimes instead we plummet from seasonal stress, especially after the holiday. Is there a solution–even one for the whole year?

As described in my article in the Malibu Chronicle, (”Staying Balanced at the Winter Solstice, p. 49,) if our emotions are volatile and easily sabotaged, then we can look for cause and effect factors inside and out.  There IS an emotional vortex in our middle section that has the potential of being boiled into a block–even though this area is called ”the solar plexus” and should have sunshine flowing out of it.  Instead, this pressure cooker boiling in our middle causes heat to get trapped above.

This heat rising in the body is one of the main causal imbalances that an acupuncturist addresses. We can break up this quagmire to alleviate this polarizing of our energy.  Sometimes it is just shut down–a dormant area, stifling the normal circulation of blood and chi through the body.

This dam of emotional plaque now results in a hot head and cold feet. Hot upper symptoms are headaches, heartburn, tight muscles, and even ringing in the ears, as the excess energy is under pressure above. Meanwhile below we might have low back pain, weak flaccid intestines, low libido, varicose veins, and cold feet. Heartburn, acid reflux or a hiatal hernia occur right in the emotional center.

In Part IV  I will discuss how we can empty out the psychic plaque of our personal drama and be ready to refuel with these special cosmic energies pouring in all the time but especially at the Solstice season. Our solar plexus can again be a SUN radiating out to all parts of the body and out to others. The sunny chakra that knits the upper and lower halves back together. A bright solstice solar light to the world! Let’s drink to that Holiday Cheer and an amazing New Year!

Ancestral Soul at Solstice Time Part II

blue winter 2Our ancestral soul at Solstice time is designed to be a blessing, not a curse.  So how to avoid the Holiday blues?? While we carry on the traditions of gaeity and solemnity during this season, our emotional centers are often wrought with negative reactions to life’s (and the season’s) challenges, and we can become even more sensitive at this time of year. We may not be part of a circle of loved ones.  As a result, we might suffer resentment since our culture programs us to focus on drama and conflict—in films, TV and in our own lives, which requires dramatic tension, adversity, crisis, and lots of pathos.
diaphonous bodySo the effects of stress are equally traumatic for the body whether we expose our poor nerves to our own real life dramas or to fictional ones; to bad memories of our life time or to the echos of our ancestors’ plights.  Over the years the ‘plaque’ of so many griefs, grievances, and resentments collects in the heart and solar plexus area of the body, the center of our emotional life.  This build-up creates an armoring across the middle. The free circulation of blood and lymph that we experienced as a child is now cut off at a chest-high bottleneck and no longer flows freely up and down from head to toe.  In Part III, I will share how to address to create champagne from this bottleneck.

PEMF moves Inflammation

neck light  Electromagnetic Field Stim [PEMF] moves inflammation as its first action.  When I lecture and invite volunteers to try it for 3 minutes, virtually every one feels an immediate difference.  PEMF consists of a painless pulsing action applied to any part of the body. It has most commonly been used in healing soft-tissue wounds and suppressing inflammatory responses at the cellular level to alleviate pain and increase range of motion in muscles and joints.

Energy-BodyIt is FDA approved for the treatment of non-union fractures, failed fusions, and particularly good for depression and PTSD.  PEMF therapy up-regulates the body’s functions and optimizes the body’s ability to heal itself. We ARE electromagnetic beings. If those fields get weak, we feel it!

One formula for Menstruation and Menopause Symptoms?

Lilith RossettiIs it possible to find a single powerful formula for women in general for menstruation and menopause symptoms?  Something to cover most of the fluctuations that can occur in the intricate female system?  The Longevity Pure Medicine line has just such an all-round tonic for women: Female Essential. One important ingredient is Sepia, possibly the most famous female remedy in Homeopathic literature.  For over 100 years, homeopaths have extracted Sepia from the ink of cuttlefish to treat depression, menstrual problems, and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.

A tiny Sepia pill would typically contain 1/100th of a molecule of cuttlefish ink. Just like the effects of splitting the atom, this breaking down of the substance unleashes the atom’s energetic potential without the dense material substance. The discovery of this homeopathic extraction process became the basis for the development of  innoculations…the birth of vaccines.

Female EssentialA miraculous substance, Sepia is known to improve overall mood and eliminate irritability, especially useful during times of PMS or menopause. Practitioners may use the tincture for bodily aches, infertility, libido loss, or exhaustion.

Female Essentials helps with monthly PMS and cramps.  It seems to address most female issues by balancing heat and cold fluctuations.  If chemicals release MORE power when they are reduced, then they become more innately deep acting—not just a band aid to cover the underlying problem, like most conventional medicines.  For $10., a tube lasts forever.  Check it out!

Our Genes affected by Epigenes

Our genes affected by epigenes?  Who knew? I was rereading an earlier blog I’d posted about Angelina Jolie’s choice to remove her breasts prophylactically because of her trusting the bad advice that her compromised genes should dictate this action.  I felt that some of the info deserved repeating. Here is the gist of the article by Sayer Ji at GreenMedInfo.com in my previous blog that, despite so-called ‘evidence-based medicine,’ acknowledges the most current evidence of genetics.

Christiane's statueBasically he states that, following the completion of the first draft of the entire human genome in 2000, the central dogma of molecular biology – that our DNA controls protein expression, and therefore disease risk – was disproved. Our genome was found to contain roughly only 20,000 genetic instructions  – not even enough to account for the 100,000 proteins in the human body!”

As a result, we now know that the field of epigenetics or ”Junk genes,” is much more important than genes.  Epigenetic factors are influenced by a combination of nutrition, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and psychospiritual states that feed back into our physiology.  They constitute as high as 95% of what determines any disease risk. In fact, ”even the psychological trauma associated with being diagnosed with cancer is enough to drive a malignancy via adrenaline-mediated multi-drug resistance, and according to a recent NEJM study, leads up to a 26-fold increased risk of heart-related deaths in the seven days following diagnosis.”  ETH Zurich. “Epigenetics: DNA Isn’t Everything.” ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 13 April 2009. . In other words, our mental/emotional state can influence directly the physiological activity of healthy and cancerous cells, more than our inherited ancestral genes.

Blood, Lymph and Electrical Circuitry: Keeping Channels Open for Mind & Body

Blood, lymph and electrical circuitry work together to make our body-brain run.  The brain and body are not two separate things to integrate; actually the brain extends throughout the body via the nerves, neurotransmitters, and the natural opiates delivered to every cell.  So those three critical physiological flows promote the innate intelligence and emotional stability, not just of the brain, but of every one of the body’s 70 trillion cells.

The red blood cell is an energy transformer having the organic (hemoglobin) and inorganic (iron) components that create ‘Orgone’ energy, as described by Wilhelm Reich. Lymph is the living ‘go-between’ fluid that feeds this life-giving properties to the cell.

Our bodies have an interior field of radiation involving many different wavelengths of light.  Researchers have identified our cells as bio-photons, originating from solar photons.  It has been shown that injured cells emit an even stronger light ray, as if it were a distress signal.  It might even be the increased oxydative stress that sets off the stronger light emission.

There are greatAlex Gray I techniques to break through the armoring that builds up throughout the body and blocks the proper transmission.  The body is the sorry battlefield of the chattering, conflict-centered mind which blocks our birthright of bliss consciousness.  A mindful breath is the first step to melt the barriers and feel the flow from mind, heart, right down to the toes.

When we take moments out of the day to FEEL our breath deeply, and FEEL this inner field of light, we are immediately rewarded with feel-good endorphins that flood the system.  The more we do this, the more we get a cumulative effect which also strengthens our immune system as another bonus.  Can’t lose…!

The Effects of Positive Thinking on Mental Health

white lightThe effects of positive thinking on mental health  is a popular subject as presented in the film ”The Secret.”  We have all become familiar with the idea that a positive internal state has a direct impact on how we view and respond to the world.  Now we are learning more about how it affects our resulting neurophysiology.  Researchers in physio-cognitive medicine report that when we think an emotional thought, a certain brain wave pattern sends information into the body in the form of nervous system reactions.  This affects our hormone excretions and other chemical reactions in the body. If we had a negative experience in the past and we think about it again and again, this will affect  the body and mind in the same way as if we were actually having the experience over and over again.  Each time the thought occurs, it incites the same negative biochemical and hormonal cascade in the body. This rethinking about a negative event is like a negative meditation and the body establishes a pattern based on this – a negative physiological pattern that gives rise to physical illness and suffering.

Luckily, the same is true conversely for positive thinking techniques: If we evaluate our life experiences positively and remember happy occasions, then these pleasant images trigger the same neuro-physiological responses as if we were actually having the good experience in present time.  Frankly, this gives me the impression that the body is quite indiscriminating.  I have a good imagination but I feel there is a difference between my memory of chocolate cake and eating it NOW.  Just as my opinion of ”God” has changed–if He does not understand that prayers of supplication—asking for what I DON’T HAVE, should not necessarily result in my now creating an energy of Lack that will now be imprinted further.  But the upside of looking at the upside outweighs all down sides..!  I invite your input on this subject!

I designed my Stress Relief CDs to emphasize how to do just that–get all the feel-good chemicals to flow. And they are available here on this blog site. For if the neuro science findings are true, then we can play with this new paradigm and see if it works–to relive the good times in our minds so that we can experience the positive effects of past joys on our bodies. And interpret present situations in the most “Glass half FULL” attitude possible so as to not set off a cascade of unhealthy chemicals in the body.  Instead we want the endorphins and the dopamine to flow….!

Let’s treat Veterans on Valentines Day with CDs & Gift Baskets

Remember the families

Help me help Veterans on Valentines Day with CDs & Gift Baskets! Yes, I invite my readers to help me support Veterans with PTSD, as well as the families of dying and fallen Veterans, in Southern California. Valentine’s Day is the day of the Heart.  And the heart IS the physical center of our emotional well-being.  The term ”Soldiers Heart” was the Civil War term for shell shock or PTSD.  SoldiersHeart.org addresses the spiritual wounds of Veterans and their families by developing a new and honorable warrior identity supported by community.  So I would like to send them my VETERANS STRESS RELIEF CDs for Valentine’s Day.  Can you help me do that?

Eliz me & baskets for Vets 2Over the holidays I provided 75 gift baskets at my own expense to HonoringOurFallen.org.  I also funded 200 Vets Stress Relief CDs and CDs designed for the general public for the widows and families.  My fundraising outreach was sabotaged by my collision with a drunk driver so I covered the outlays alone.  Here with Elizabeth England, we’d planned on 150 baskets. Now I’m continuing again for Valentine’s Day with CDs and gifts for three Vets group, including TheTwilightBrigade.org which helps Vets in their last days.

If you donate toward this Veterans Valentine’s Day Outreach right here at BrainBodyBliss.com you will be helping support dying Veterans, grieving families, and the young returning soldiers who are struggling with trauma, toxic accumulations, excessive medications, and difficult economic circumstances.

The PAYPAL button is below and on the BrainBodyBliss.com Veterans page.  Another way to help this campaign is simply to purchase a Vet or non-Vet CD for yourself or to give to a friend.  The proceeds will go directly toward this campaign.  The Blind Veterans Association has ordered fifty CDs for their members.

EarthHarmonyFoundation.org is handling any large tax deductible donations for this cause.  I am currently Director of Community Outreach for EarthHarmonyFoundation.org [EFH], founder and manager of the organization’s food bank program and the Veterans PTSD Project.  EHF is a non-profit educational, environmental, and humanitarian organization dedicated to protecting the world’s marginalized, including Veterans, children, and the planet. A non-profit 501C3, it will accept donations towards our efforts for SoldiersHeart.org, TheTwilightBrigade.org, and HonoringOurFallen.org.

Soldier’s Heart, developed by Edward Tick, Ph.D., provides a unique and comprehensive model to address the emotional and spiritual wounds of veterans and their families. Edward Tick’s groundbreaking book, War and the Soul, explores ancient and cross-cultural warrior traditions that reveal the necessities for successful warrior return.

Honoring Our Fallen (http://honoringourfallen.org) was created specifically to aid families in the tragic moments of a fallen warrior’s return home and to continue support through outreach programs.  There are 743 Californians who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan wars, leaving behind devastated families. California is home to the largest number of military who have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Twilight Brigade is one of the largest end-of-life care organizations, operating as an independent agency within VA hospitals and hospice care facilities across America. I have studied with founder, Dannion Brinkley, who has 5,000 volunteers.  His endorsement on my CD means a lot. We are intersupporting each other’s efforts.

VETERANS STRESS RELIEF CDs: Both versions of guided relaxation meditations encourage the release of endorphins and dopamine—our body’s natural ‘feel good’ chemicals—to spread them into receptor sites in EVERY CELL OF THE BODY. The easy self-help exercises and practical tools provide a self-healing empowerment for PTSD, depression, loss, and grief, or to rise from ‘Okay’ to higher states of wellbeing. STRESS RELIEF recordings are available for free listening on this website www.BrainBodyBliss.com. Thousands of young soldiers are suffering fatal heart attacks from too many meds for pain and mental suffering. We have to provide another answer.

Graham Nash and Dr. Kathleen RosenblattRenowned singer/songwriter Graham Nash has contributed generously to my project of acupuncture and  STRESS RELIEF CDs. It complements a Veteran’s ongoing therapies and helps restore well-being and good sleep.  I have lectured twice at the Combat Stress Conference about the science behind them and my work has been well-received and found many new supporters for cellular meditation for PTSD.
Happy Valentine’s Day!  May your heart shine…!

Emotions and Internal Organs

Acupuncture theorists address emotions and internal organs in the same fell swoop. Dr. Andrew Weil reports on a British study showing the success of acupuncture for depression, and adds his own positive opinion based on his experience.  http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/WBL02371/Acupuncture-for-Depression.html  So, how does it work?

Thousands of years ago, the Chinese discovered a specific interaction among the five major organs that is still unrecognized in Western medicine. The Law of Five Elements refers to particular interactions between the major ‘solid’ organs: heart, liver, lung, pancreas and kidney. Each of these is paired with one of the ‘tube’ organs (like intestines) and each pair feeds the next pair in a certain order. If there is excess energy in the stomach causing heartburn, then there is a single point that can pull this excess energy into the lungs/large intestine if they are deficient and cold. The same energy that wreaked havoc in the stomach can now benefit the deficient lung or intestine. Thus we eliminate two problems with one treatment!

When the major organs are balanced among themselves they work together in harmony, as the ultimate example of Wholistic health! But when out of balance, they can then lead to emotional obstructions and these can result in blockages, pain, inflammation and overeating from stress.  If a patient has severe trauma, extended depression, anxiety or other emotional stress, this damages the major organ systems. So we see that treating the whole body affects both mind and body.

In Chinese medicine, each major organ has it own related emotional symptom, but it is a two-way street. There is a feedback loop between the organ and the feeling. The mind can affect the organ, and the organ can affect the mind. Excessive grief damages the lungs or, if the lungs are weak, then melancholy may appear.  Obsessive thinking and over-eating damages the spleen; and excessive fear damages or can develop from the kidneys. Excessive worry hurts the liver and likewise, if the liver is toxic then anger or depression may develop. Liver disharmony can also cause some of the “triggers” that lead to cravings and compulsive eating.

So the body is, in fact, more ‘whole’ than most people realize. The internal connections are astonishing.  An acupuncturist can work simultaneously on the physical symptoms and the emotional issues using the same few points.  Mental, emotional, and physical issues all addressed in the same session.  One stop shop!

Veterans PTSD Treatment

Veterans Acupuncture for Veterans with PTSD: How can we make acupuncture and meditation more available to our military Veterans? If they are returning with severe trauma and pain, we need to address this problem before it worsens.

As a pioneer acupuncturist in this country, I have aided many Veterans suffering from PTSD through my multi-pronged Veterans PTSD Project: a therapy program for releasing deep-seated anxiety and depression. It includes:

  • Acupuncture treatment for physical and emotional pain.
  • Deep-state endorphin release achieved through herbs and pharmaceuticals, specialized massage, breathing techniques, verbal programming, and other modalities.
  • The powerful Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Stimulator that can regenerate cell tissue anywhere in the brain or body, FDA approved for depression.
  • My  Cellular Meditation VETERANS STRESS RELIEF audio CDs. Two STRESS RELIEF recorded segments are available for listening for free on this blog site www.BrainbodyBliss.com.

Acupuncture or massage point combinations can open up blocked neural centers, waking up the right bio-electrical frequencies.  This can help “teach” traumatized cells how to “unlearn” states of fear and demoralization.  It helps remove physical imbalances such as inflammation, toxicity, pain, brain chemistry imbalance, physical injuries and overall systems blockage.  This treatment affects these issues by helping to break up intracellular energy trauma and revitalize subcellular metabolism.  This impacts the mental and emotional systems as well.

Acupuncture and the Stress Release CDs both address the entire body’s natural, feel-good neuro-hormones to regenerate the proper brain-body connections.  This restores a state of wellbeing and good sleep.

I have lectured twice at the Combat Stress Conference, explaining the science behind the CDs and treatment therapies.  Many Veterans groups are requesting help.  Singer/songwriter Graham Nash has generously contributed, but much more is needed to fill this critical need.  Drug therapy alone does not always go deep enough and often wears off or causes side effects.

We are working toward the opening of a clinical program for Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder located near the West L.A. V.A.  This will help Vets transition to civilian life, helping to eliminate both painful memories and painful conditions.

Cellular Meditation is the full-body form of meditation—made easy. It is about getting endorphins, our own feel-good chemicals into ALL THE CELLS OF THE BODY—by freeing them up, and sensing them from inside.  It is the ‘Feel Good’ form of meditation, easier to do than other meditation practices, while also achieving deeper results.  A version of the double CDs is also available for the general public and the Veterans’ families.

Studies have shown that relaxing meditation techniques increase the feel-good neuro-transmitters that counter mood disorders, such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA; and beneficial hormones such as DHEA, HGH (human growth hormone), and melatonin for anti-aging and good sleep. Meditation also reduces harmful cortisol produced by stress.

Many Veterans and civilians have benefited from the treatments and these CDs. Our non-profit Earth Harmony Foundation.org receives tax deductible donations from those who want to help our returning soldiers by funding their distribution to many veterans organizations who have requested these CDs.

Medical Pollution: Poli-Meds that Kill

Drugs

Medical Polution: Poli-Meds that Kill

Medical polution and poli-meds that kill is a problem that needs addressing. According to OffGridSurvival.com, “One out of every  5 U.S. adults is taking at least one behavioral pharmaceutical drug and more than one in four women is taking at least one mood altering medication.”  Dr. Mercola writes, “Death by medicine is a 21st-century epidemic, and America’s “war on drugs” is clearly directed at the wrong enemy!”

Prescription drugs are now killing far more people than illegal drugs.  An analysis of recently released data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by the Los Angeles Times revealed that deaths from prescription drug use are increasing. The Times analysis of 2009 death statistics, the most recent available, showed: For the first time ever in the US, more people were killed by drugs than motor vehicle accidents.  37,485 people died from prescribed drugs. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69.

There are few research studies on the effects of multiple drugs on a single individual.  The specialists who each prescribe for you are in different departments, different buildings.  Do your specialists confer with one another about your case? One gives an antacid; another gives a blood pressure medication; yet another an anti-depressant. Throw in an allergy medication.  How ’bout a steroid? An antibiotic?  As we all know, there is nothing unusual about such a concoction. Maybe you need another few pills to counteract ALL the combined side effects.  Now you might need a laxative for the drug-induced constipation, or something for the drug induced lethargy and lack of libido.

Recently I took a webinar featuring the fifty most popular drugs contrasted with Chinese herbal formulas for addressing the most common medical issues.  Time-tested formulas to replace the beta-blocker, the antacid, the steroid, the antibiotic, and the anti-depressant.  These carefully crafted formulas might act slower but have virtually none of the side effects of prescribed drugs.

The best thing about these formulas is that they do more than just MASK the symptom and numb the pain—an action which often drives the problem deeper.  Instead, the REMEDY is what goes deep to get to the bottom of the problem, working on the underlying causes. You could also call it ‘working upstream,’ getting at the cause of inflammation before it differentiates into arthritis, or a stroke, or any other possible inflammatory conditions.

I have had good results with patients going this route. A 12-year sinus infection resistant to antibiotics—Gone! Smell and taste returned. And in this current climate of HMO and Insurance company control of doctors and medical procedures, the ability to probe deeper has been removed even further from the doctor’s hands.  I’m told that an MRI MUST preceed a simple appointment with the physical therapist who might be able to work out that kink before it needs anything else.

Let vanity work for you.  Multiple medications confuse the body and make it age faster. Find an informed doctor who uses what is called “functional medicine.”  If the energy body underlying all the physical organs is not addressed, and if the mind and emotions are not exercised and healed, then it is like making a cake lacking crucial ingredients.  We are dealing with human bodies programmed over 30,000 years to have adequate exercise, clean air and lots of time between hunting raids and food gathering for simple relaxation. We must turn to Nature for cures and equanimity…!

Emotional Abuse: Generational and Self-Inflicted

Hurting Hearts - PTSD

Emotional abuse, both generational and self-inflicted, keeps us in an emotional prison that we learn to call ‘home.’  As in my last post, this emotional strangle-hold is literally that: a strangle hold around our throat, our lungs, and solar plexus. “My heart was in my throat”, “I had butterflies in my stomach.”  Those individuals most heavily burdened emotionally often have heartburn, acid reflux or a hiatal hernia–all impairments that occur right where the emotional center is happening. It is not an accident. Most depressed individuals are shallow weak breathers. They are not getting nourished adequately by this precious substance that enters when we breathe generously with gusto!

Nowadays the term ‘mind-body’ is mentioned so often that one assumes one understands all its ramifications.  But most people do not understand that the brain occurs all through the body. The preeminent endorphin researcher Candace Pert entitled her recent book: Your Body is Your Subconscious Mind. In it she shares new research that shows that the brain’s activity is more dependent on hormones than it is on the synaptic action of the brain neurons. She claims the term ‘brain blood barrier” is an anachronism left over from our old paradigm of separating the brain and

body. She states that AIDS researchers have isolated immune cells in the brain that originated for instance in the bones. The interaction is constant. The neuropeptide hormonal soup is lapping up in the brain but even more so around the spine and the entire digestive system.

When we breathe deeply into our lungs and abdomen we can begin to break up the strangle hold of negativity in our emotional center. We can clear from its walls the toxic plaque made up of old griefs and grievances. When this dissolves then we have space for something new. The bions of light blasting us from our Sun and magnetism from our living entity Earth. As we travel every day about 25 million miles through the galaxy we encounter brand new energies daily. Every day going where no man has gone before… Imagine!

Please share your feedback in the comments box below. I would love to hear from you!

Emotional Intelligence? How the Emotional Center Cuts the Body in Two

The lack of emotional Intelligence–how the emotional center cuts the body in two is a critical factor for our overall mental and emotional health.  The heart and solar plexus area of the body is the center of our emotional life. Given the attraction toward drama in Western culture, our emotional centers are often wrought with negative reactions to life’s ups and downs.  In our culture we appreciate a good dramatic plot which requires adversity, dramatic tension, crises, and lots of pathos. Every love song depicts a broken heart and lost love; most films contain assault and murder.  This is what we pay money to watch as ‘entertainment.’  It is beyond my understanding, since I can produce my own drama quite well in real life.

So whether we expose our poor nerves to real life dramas or fictional ones, the effect is traumatic for the body.  Over the years the ‘plaque’ of so many griefs and grievances, resentments and disappointments collects in the emotional center.  This build-up creates an armoring across the middle. The free circulation of blood and lymph that we experienced as a child is now cut off at a bottleneck.

The constancy of temperature regulation is undermined—we now tend to have a hot head and cold feet. This can go along with many other similar symptoms such as headaches, heartburn, tight muscles, and even ringing in the ears, as the excess energy is under pressure above. Meanwhile below we might have low back pain, poor flacid intestines, low libido, varicose veins and cold feet.

This problem of heat rising and top heavy energy is one of the main causal imbalances that an acupuncturist addresses. We must look to our emotional center to alleviate the pressure cooker that is boiling or exploding in our middle. Or it is sometimes a dead and dormant area, totally suffocating the normal circulation of blood and chi through the body.

This is the perfect set-up for the atrophying cellular action that we call cancer. This action occurs when the oxygen is stifled and when the terrain is so acidic that normal cellular life cannot flourish.  Cells are swamped in stagnant toxicity–the perfect fertilizer for down graded cells to proliferate like plants.

And what is the main culprit? The poor coping mechanisms–measured by our low scoring emotional IQ. We often are not given any direction toward a spiritual connection to the universe, to the planet, to our community, to our inner core.  Our spirit must be nurtured by our respiration–respiriting our whole body. I will address this further with more solutions to this armored emotions syndrome.

Please share with me your comments here below about the problem and the answers…! I appreciate the many emails but your enthusiasm is appreciated here!

By Dr. Mercola

Chronic pain is an exceedingly common condition impacting an estimated 76.5 million Americans, one-third of whom describe their pain as severe and “disabling.” When it comes to treating ailments such as chronic pain, I definitely prefer non-toxic options to modern medicine’s poor excuses for “cures.”

One such option is acupuncture, which can be an effective option for a number of health problems, but pain in particular.

In a recent analysis published in the Archives of Internal Medicine,1 researchers concluded that acupuncture has a definite effect in reducing chronic pain, such as back pain and headaches – more so than standard pain treatment. Real acupuncture also produced slightly better results than using sham needles, which suggests the benefits of needling are due to more than the placebo effect.

According to Time magazine:2

“The findings counter those of the last large study on the subject, which found that the needle technique was no better than a fake acupuncture treatment – using random pricking with toothpicks – in reducing people’s pain. But Vickers says his meta-analysis of the data, in which researchers reviewed 29 previous studies involving 17,922 participants, does a few things the previous studies did not.

For one, he and his colleagues began by looking at only the most rigorous trials involving acupuncture and pain relief – those that directly compared acupuncture treatment with some type of sham needle therapy in which needles were either inserted only superficially or placed in locations that are not known by acupuncture standards to be key treatment points in the body.

The authors of the analysis contacted each of the researchers on the previous studies to discuss with them how they separated the two treatment groups. By limiting their review to the most robust studies published, the authors could assess with more confidence acupuncture’s true effect on participants’ reports of pain before and after treatment.”

Clear and Robust Effects of Acupuncture

The researchers also went the extra mile by retrieving the raw data on self-reported pain. By standardizing the various study participants’ responses, they were able to more accurately assess and compare them as a whole. The team discovered a “clear and robust” effect of acupuncture in the treatment of:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Headaches

On a scale of 0 to 100, participants who started out with a pain rating of 60 experienced an average 30 point drop (a 50 percent reduction) in response to the real acupuncture treatments (using needles); a 25 point drop when receiving sham acupuncture; and a mere 17 point drop when receiving “standard pain care” that did not include acupuncture. According to the lead author:3

“The effects of acupuncture are statistically significant and different from those of sham or placebo treatments… So we conclude that the effects aren’t due merely to the placebo effect.”

Furthermore, as reported by HealthDay:4

“The authors stressed that although the superiority of true acupuncture over sham acupuncture appeared to be relatively small, the real-world choice patients face is not between acupuncture or fake acupuncture but rather between acupuncture or no acupuncture at all. And in that context they suggested that their findings are ‘of major importance for clinical practice.’

‘Basically what we see here is that the pain relief difference from acupuncture versus no acupuncture is notable, and important, and difficult to ignore,’ [lead author] Vickers said.”

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice with roots that go back thousands of years. According to the Eastern mindset, your body is a cohesive unit, or whole – a complex system where everything within it is inter-connected, and where each part affects all other parts. A major component is the acceptance of an invisible flow of chi (or ki). This chi can be translated as “energy” or “life force,” which circulates through meridians in your body. When energetic blocks or deficiencies occur within a meridian, an imbalance is created that can cause a ripple effect of physical symptoms. Needles inserted into certain points along the meridians can stimulate sluggish chi, disperse blocks, or otherwise manipulate the flow of energy.

In essence, lack of balance within this bio-energetic system – which also includes blood flow and nutrients – is the precursor to all illness. Your body exhibits symptoms when suffering from inner disease and if it is not rebalanced, these symptoms may lead to acute or chronic illnesses of all kinds.

Chinese medicine, contrary to Western allopathic medicine, does not treat symptoms, but rather seeks to find the origin of the imbalance that produced the symptoms in the first place. Another major difference is that acupuncture, which is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is remarkably safe with few, if any, negative side effects, so it certainly doesn’t hurt to try.

Traditionally, acupuncture is used to treat all kinds of health problems. In many Asian cultures, you see an acupuncturist in the same way you’d see a primary care physician here in the West, and in someUSstates acupuncturists are in fact considered primary health care physicians. Still, many Westerners have been slow to grasp this type of holistic view, where your body is perceived as being perfectly capable of self-correction and healing without drug intervention. Scientists are still at a loss to explain why acupuncture works, but for those who get relief or healing, the mechanics may not be of great importance.

Other Alternative Pain Treatments

Besides acupuncture, there are a number of treatment modalities that can help ease pain, such as:

  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT): Few people want to be told that their pain is psychological or emotional in origin, but there’s quite a bit of evidence that backs this up. Underlying emotional issues and unresolved trauma can have a massive influence on your health, particularly as it relates to physical pain. According to Dr. John Sarno, a psychiatrist who uses mind-body techniques to treat patients with severe low back pain, EFT has a greater than 80 percent success rate
  • Chiropractic adjustments: According to a recent study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine5 and funded by the National Institutes of Health, patients with neck pain who used a chiropractor and/or exercise were more than twice as likely to be pain free in 12 weeks compared to those who took medication
  • Massage: Massage releases endorphins, which help induce relaxation, relieve pain, and reduce levels of stress chemicals such as cortisol and noradrenaline – reversing the damaging effects of stress by slowing heart rate, respiration and metabolism and lowering raised blood pressure. It is a particularly effective therapy for stress-related tension, which experts believe accounts for as much as 80 to 90 percent of disease
  • Neuro-Structural Integration Technique (NST): NST is a gentle, non-invasive technique that stimulates your body’s reflexes, which can provide relief for back pain. Simple movements are done across muscles, nerves and connective tissue, which helps your neuromuscular system to reset all related tension levels, promoting natural healing. The results can be both profound and lasting, and are usually apparent within two or three sessions.

More Natural Solutions for Pain

If you have chronic pain of any kind, please understand that there are many safe and effective alternatives to prescription and over-the-counter painkillers, though they may require some patience. Among the best are:

  • Start taking a high-quality, animal-based omega-3 fat like krill oil. Omega-3 fats are precursors to mediators of inflammation called prostaglandins. (In fact, that is how anti-inflammatory painkillers work, they positively influence prostaglandins.) The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA contained in krill oil have also been found in many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Reduce your intake of most processed foods as not only do they contain sugar and additives but most are loaded with omega-6 fats that upset your delicate omega 3-6 ratio, which will contribute to inflammation.
  • Eliminate or radically reduce most grains and sugars (especially fructose) from your diet. Avoiding grains and sugars will lower your insulin and leptin levels. Elevated insulin and leptin levels are one of the most profound stimulators of inflammatory prostaglandin production. That is why eliminating sugar and grains is so important to controlling your pain.
  • Optimize your production of vitamin D by getting regular, appropriate sun exposure, which will work through a variety of different mechanisms to reduce your pain.

In the meantime, you don’t need to suffer unnecessarily. Following are options that provide excellent pain relief without any of the health hazards that pain medications often carry.

  • Astaxanthin: One of the most effective oil-soluble antioxidants known. It has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and in many cases works far more effectively than NSAIDs. Higher doses are typically required and one may need 8 mg or more per day to achieve this benefit.
  • Ginger: This herb is anti-inflammatory and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.
  • Curcumin: Curcumin is the primary therapeutic compound identified in the spice turmeric. In a study of osteoarthritis patients, those who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility. In fact, curcumin has been shown in over 50 clinical studies to have potent anti-inflammatory activity, as well as demonstrating the ability in four studies to reduce Tylenol-associated adverse health effects.
  • Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or “Indian frankincense,” this herb contains powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which have been prized for thousands of years. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • Bromelain: This protein-digesting enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple may also be helpful. Keep in mind that most of the bromelain is found within the core of the pineapple, so consider leaving a little of the pulpy core intact when you consume the fruit.
  • Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a “joint lubricant” and an anti-inflammatory. I have used a topical preparation for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards.
  • Evening Primrose, Black Currant and Borage Oils: These contain the fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain.

Double Mastectomy for Cancer Prevention?

I am Reposting the article from GreenMedInfo.com here on May 15th 2013.  Note – I have been lecturing on the variability of genes and how the DNA in the mitochondria depends greatly on what we think, eat and do in our life.  Here is an article that explains this more in depth in relation to Angelina Jolie’s life choice.  —Dr. Kathleen

Did Angelina Jolie Make A Mistake By Acting On The ‘Breast Cancer Gene’ Theory?

Posted on GreenMedInfo.com, Tuesday, May 14th 2013 at 12:45 pm, Written By: Sayer Ji, Founder, GreenMedInfo.com

The ‘prophylactic’ removal of women’s breasts due to BRCA1/BRCA2 status has become a disturbingly popular trend, and increasingly it is being celebrated in the mainstream media and medical establishments as a reasonable choice. But does the scientific evidence itself refute this approach?

Angelina Jolie’s recent announcement in a New York Times op-ed that she had a ‘prophylactic’ double mastectomy due to her BRCA1/BRCA2 status has disturbing implications, some of which we covered late last year in connection with Allyn Rose, the 24-year old Miss America contestant who announced she would be undergoing a double mastectomy to “prevent” breast cancer.

Beyond the fact that as high-profile celebrities their decisions will affect millions of women’s perception of the procedure, likely making them more accepting of the concept, their decisions also reflect profound misconceptions about gene-mediated disease risk embedded deeply within popular consciousness, from which prevailing medical opinion is hardly immune.

First, there is a common misconception about the role that the so-called breast cancer susceptibility genes, BRCA1 and BRCA2, play in breast cancer disease risk and prognosis. BRCA mutations vary widely by ethnicity and are exceedingly rare in the general population, which is why, as NBCNews.com recently reported, “The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that only women with a strong family history even think about getting a BRCA genetic test –which is only 2 percent of U.S. women.” But even in those in which a BRCA mutation is identified, the genes, in and of themselves, do not alone make the disease.

Despite the commonplace refusal of so-called ‘evidence-based medicine’ to acknowledge the actual evidence of genetics, we moved into a Post-Genomic era over a decade ago following the completion of first draft of the entire human genome in 2000. At that moment, the central dogma of molecular biology – that our DNA controls protein expression, and therefore disease risk – was disproved. Our genome was found to contain roughly 20,000 genetic instructions – not even enough to account for the 100,000 proteins in the human body!

As a result, we must now accept that factors beyond the control of the gene, known as epigenetic factors, and largely determined by a combination of nutrition, psychospiritual states that feed back into our physiology, lifestyle factors, and environmental exposures, constitute as high as 95% of what determines any disease risk. In fact, even the psychological trauma associated with being diagnosed with cancer can drive malignancy via adrenaline-mediated multi-drug resistance,[i] and according to a recent NEJM study, lead up to a 26-fold increased risk of heart-related deaths in the seven days following diagnosis.[ii]

Given this fact, Jolie’s decision to have a bilateral mastectomy in order to excise from her body the breast tissue that contains BRCA1/BRCA2 genes which are known to interfere with the repair of radiation-induced DNA damage, rather than focusing on reducing or eliminating all future radiation exposure from her breasts, or incorporating hundreds of nutritional components experimentally confirmed to protect against radiation and associated genotoxic insults to the breast, reflects a iron clad faith in the inevitability of gene-driven cancer vis-à-vis a fundamentally powerless subject, versus trust in the body’s ability to prevent and heal all disease, assuming it has the right conditions.

Another common misconception is that you either have, or don’t have the “BRACA genes,” as if they were monolithic entities, ascertained with the black and white certainty of a pregnancy test. It is a little known fact that thousands of “mutations” in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have already been identified and characterized on a molecular level, adding much more complexity to the picture than the present level of medical knowledge can claim to convert into compelling statistical risk calculations and actionable treatment recommendations.

These mutations are technically known as gene polymorphisms which are naturally occurring variations of a gene present in more than 1% of the populations. It will come to many as a surprise to learn that some of these so-called “mutations” actually REDUCE the risk of breast cancer. BRCA1 variation K1 183R is related inversely to cancer risk, leading the authors of a review on the topic titled, “The case against BRCA1 and 2 testing,” to conclude: “It seems that some polymorphisms may actually have a protective effect.”[iii] Moreover, research exists showing that BRCA2 mutation carriers and non-carriers have similar breast cancer-specific rates of breast-cancer specific death,[iv] and that although BRCA positive patients have more frequently negative prognostic factors, their prognosis appears to be equal to or better than in patients with normal, also known as wild-type, BRCA.[v]

Another concerning blind spot in the framing of Jolie’s decision is that approximately 70,000 breast cancers (31% of annual breast cancers diagnoses) are misdiagnosed by the vast breast cancer ‘awareness’ and treatment complex each year.[vi] These are not just so-called “zero stage” breast cancers such as Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), which arguably should be reclassified as non-cancerous normal variations in breast morphology, but 50% are known as early-stage “invasive” breast cancers [view NEJM study video analysis here].

How many of these women, having received a mammography-detected diagnosis of breast cancer and then a follow up BRCA test, believed that the gene must have therefore “caused” the “cancer”? The popularization of this crude way of understanding natural, sometimes self-limiting variations in breast morphology as cases of “breast cancer” is itself a malignancy that should be prevented and treated with healthy doses of the very ‘evidence’ that the so-called ‘evidence-based’ medical system claims to possess as a differentiating factor from other, more ancient, plant- and nutrition-based medical traditions.

Last November, an article published in NEJM found that 1.3 million US women were overdiagnosed and overtreated for so-called “breast cancer” in the past 30 years. These were screen-detected abnormal breast findings that would never have progressed to cause harm in the women in which they were diagnosed. These women, while essentially iatrogenic victims of medicine, being given standard treatment options, including mastectomy, lumpectomy, radiation, chemotherapy, were considered statistically as “survivors” whose lives were saved by the medical establishment, and these cases further inflated the statistics to make it appear that conventional treatment interventions are far more effective than they actually are.

Given these facts, Jolie’s decision conceals a dark side that she, like millions of other American women, are completely unaware of. For example, look at the soaring stock response of Myriad Genetics, the patent-holders of the human genes BRCA1/BRCA2, soon after Jolie’s announcement in this Yahoo Finance article published today: Myriad Genetics Shares Climb After Angelina Jolie Has Mastectomy.

The Utah-based company, contrary to popular opinion, owns patents on your BRCA genes (men have them too). And not only that, as a recent Slate article explains:

[Myriad Genetics] claims to own the rights to any test for the presence of the two critical genes associated with breast cancer, and it has ruthlessly enforced that right, though their test is inferior to one that Yale University was willing to provide at much lower cost. The consequences have been tragic: Thorough, affordable testing that identifies high-risk patients saves lives. Blocking such testing costs lives. Myriad is a true example of an American corporation for which profit trumps all other values, including the value of human life itself.

Given the fact that powerful, profit-driven corporations stand to reap profound financial benefit from the propagation of an oversimplified gene-driven theory of breast cancer susceptibility, we must be cautious in jumping on the mainstream media and medical bandwagon by viewing Jolie’s increasingly popular decision uncritically. Consider also that women who undergo these mastectomies often opt for breast implants which themselves have been linked to cancer, as we discussed in our article from last year, “Implanted: The Myth of the Cancer-Free Breast Implant,” and which only recently were linked to more aggressive breast cancer, and lower breast cancer survival rates.

What we want is the truth when it comes to understanding breast cancer risk, its natural history, and what preventive and therapeutic steps should be employed to reduce its progression and associated suffering. Unfortunately, however, the breast cancer industry’s influence stretches from academia to government, from KFC buckets of fried chicken to Smith & Wesson’s pink ribbon-branded fire arms. All the more important to read between the lines, and remember that we alone are responsible for educating ourselves, so that a truly informed choice is made possible.

Graham Nash Supports Veterans PTSD Therapy

Veterans PTSD is a problem we all are concerned about. Famed singer/songwriter Graham Nash has had a longstanding interest in the welfare of our returning Veterans. He has supported the Veterans for Peace organization in particular, given his strong feelings that war is NOT the solution for securing Peace. Graham recently had an exhibition of his cutting edge art photography at Gallery 169 in Santa Monica California, and gave half the proceeds to my Veterans PTSD Project at Earth Harmony Foundation–to promote acupuncture treatment for PTSD and to make my STRESS RELIEF CDs available to more Veterans groups. This has made possible a new design and re-release.

Graham’s music never stops and his efforts for peace and global renewal never wain. Kudos to Graham!

Many young Vets are returning, only to suffer fatal heart attacks!  The common thread among them seems to be excessive medicating for both pain and depression. I am working with others to create a multi-pronged program to restore them to health. My lectures at two annual Combat Stress Conferences were well received by Vets groups, glad to hear the scientific basis behind my CDs as an additional remedy for PTSD other than drugs.

Now the redesigned CD cover has added endorsements, from Graham, Dr. Hyla Cass, and author Danion Brinkley.  These CDs, and the version for the general public, can raise one’s level of wellbeing, no matter how high or low. From the basement to the first floor or from the fourth to the 14th!

Anyone can listen to two audio Cellular Meditation segments on my website: BrainBodyBliss.com.  One doctor who listened to the excerpt reported an 80% reduction in postpartum depression after ten minutes! She went on to happily have a second baby!

If you listen to one, I would so appreciate your pushing the comment button here on the blog and sharing your response and your experience. Thanks!

How does Exercise improves Brain Function?

exercise improves brain function?

My body has always liked moving around–I spent my childhood upside down–yet exercise can easily get pushed down my list of priorities. So, even as I preach exercise to my patients, especially dance, I still need that push myself. Thus, when I see data like the following, then exercise moves UP my list of priorities. Use it or lose it!  Meaning–Exercise or lose your mind…

As reported by The New York Times, new evidence shows that physical exercise helps your brain to not only resist shrinkage, but increase its cognitive abilities. www.nytimes.com/…/how-exercise-could-lead-to-a-better-brain.html iA study of mice illustrated the direct effect of physical exercise on the brainii.  Animals that exercised, whether or not they had any other enrichments in their cages, had healthier brains and performed significantly better on cognitive tests than the other mice.

Exercise encourages your brain to work at optimum capacity by causing nerve cells to multiply, strengthening their interconnections, and protecting them from damage. During exercise, nerve cells release proteins known as brain derived neurotrophic factors (BDNF) which activate brain stem cells to convert into new neurons. Exercise seems to prevent brain decay as much as it prevents and reverses age-related muscle decay.

Exercise also lowers the activity of bone-morphogenetic protein or BMP, a chemical which slows the production of new brain cells, while simultaneously increasing Noggin, a brain protein that acts as a BMP antagonist. The more Noggin present in your brain, the less BMP activity there is, and the more stem cell divisions and neurogenesis (production of new brain cells) takes place. So Noggin is good for your noggin… BMP (or Bump) is Baaad…

As you see in this photo of my grand nephews, exercise benefits us at any age… On the other hand, sugar suppresses BDNF neurotrophic factors, which helps explain why a low-sugar diet in combination with regular exercise is so effective for protecting memory and staving off depression.  So even if those carbs give you a brief lift in spirits, know that they will eventually leave you lower than before. Luckily, exercise and dance stimulate those feel-good opiates in the body such as the neuro-modulators Endorphins, and the neuro-transmitters Dopamine and Seratonin.  That means exercise will give us more of a long term boost in spirits than a piece of cake will, while providing many other benefits.

So bend those knees and rotate those hips! Jump and kick! For joy!

Bonnie Raitt and the Raitt Legacy of Graceful Aging

Bonnie Raitt - Gracefully Aging on Brain Body Bliss

Bonnie Raitt – Gracefully Aging

We all know what a treasure Bonnie Raitt is. What a woman–with such a voice, such guitar brilliance, and success over forty years, to then have such humility, appreciation of us out there, such joy in her work, and such immediacy in her presence. She is a goddess…!

At her concert, she was celebrating the beauty of the Greek Theater and the towering trees encircling us. The Greek opened on Sept. 29th, 1929 eighty-three years ago, just weeks before the stock market crash. It was the perfect venue for Bonnie’s intimate performance for 5800 fans.
Bonnie chatted a lot and spoke of her Dad, John Raitt who was still singing his hits til age 88. She plans to sing and play–with the same hair-do! with a walker if necessary. She hinted it might be a hover craft by then… You can watch and listen to one of her songs from Saturday night:

I’ve always loved how musicians get to age gracefully without too much
flak from the public. Actresses might feel put out to pasture, but Ella Fitzgerald just became more of a legend as she aged, and Eubie Blake played piano til 101. Only the Stones get picked on for being too old– even as they play with the exuberance of an eight-yr old.  Bonnie seemed to revel in her age and her many decades of doing what she loves. She gave birthday wishes to her guitarist: “Sixty Baby! Welcome to the deep end…!”

Her ballads cut deep but then she rocked out with Elvis’ “Big Hunk of Love.” No sense of ‘age appropriateness’ when it comes to music–it is so egalitarian. With these determined aging musicians you usually witness an increase in skill and art. They seem to only get better–like fine wine? Yet it is our generation which is the first to have to ‘grapple’ with the idea of aging since we invented “Youth Culture” and never thought we would ever grow old. Before that, eighteen year olds immediately donned ‘grown up’ clothing and became adults fast. No extended adolescence. So we are all in shock it seems as one or another organ or joint becomes painful. Mortality? What’s that?! Can we maintain a youthful maturity between adolescence and obsolescence? If we cultivate Joy and encourage our playful self, we can keep a grounded spirit ever growing and emanating outwards.

Bonnie comes from a long line of inveterate doers–She played a song
for her late Mother–a pianist and an untiring activist. I was friends
with her Dad John Raitt, the magnetic Broadway & Hollywood musical
star, and his cultivated, accomplished wife Rosemary, on the board of
Pepperdine University. They were both active, attractive octogenarians. After coming for dinner, they took us along to Bonnie’s concert where he stepped out and sang “Oklahoma” and “Oh What a Beautiful Morning”. They didn’t DO ‘aging’; they did LIVING…to the hilt! Their lust for life was contagious to the end of their lives. All the Raitts share a tradition of service and taking care of others, no matter what their age. Bonnie uses her music to promote many causes, especially against nuclear proliferation.

My son Adam, DJ and engineer at KCSN radio, got four tickets for the show. He LOVES Bonnie. Do catch her in concert if you can and hear her new album Slipstream. Bonnie’s prowess on the electric slide guitar garnered her the first signature Fender guitar named after a woman. That voice that can change from husky, smokey, to a ringing bell. Sultry and soft, she is a real steel Magnolia…
