What are those marks on Michael Phelps?  By now the public is hearing the term ”cupping.” Since I was interviewed last year by Agence France Press to do a demonstration of this procedure for their global media outreach, I will explain cupping again. Seems the sighting of Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston with cupping marks on their backs had put this ancient practice in the news…You can view it at this link: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/videonetwork/2571529145001/Remedy-of-the-Stars-Cupping-Leaves-Its-Mark-on-Hollywood.

“Cupping,” is the term for an ancient Chinese technique to eliminate the stagnant blood that typically occurs around the neck and shoulders. A small glass jar with a vacuum inside creates a suction that pulls this stuck blood to the surface capillaries. From there this ‘old’ blood can easily return through the capillary system to the heart to be re-oxygenated to restore more active blood circulation. (Here Jennifer’s marks have faded from red to white.) Other partakers are Victoria Beckham and Jessica Simpson.

I did two versions in French and English, shown worldwide. A French friend caught it on TV in Brazil.  In 1975, when actress Lee Grant was up to win an Oscar for “Shampoo,”  she declined this treatment before the gala so as NOT to have marks.  We did it the day AFTER… It took 40 years to become fashionable!

Darin 2What did not get included in the segment was my contrasting of cupping with another similar technique called Gua Sah, a friction rub that achieves the same results with some added benefits. It may look dramatic but it is not painful and most of the time actually feels great even while it is being applied! And especially afterwards.  As in cupping, these are not bruises–only the presence of stagnant blood come to the surface.  The marks recede in a day or three, depending on one’s circulation.

In my estimation, it is more comfortable and controllable, less labor intensive and more thorough. In the news clip another acupuncturist’s cupping shows the unnecessary, potentially uncomfortable side effects. Temporary raised red welts resulted from the strong degree of suction that can hurt when pulled off. This is not necessary to achieve results.

But both techniques perform a simple yet critical action of stimulating of blood, lymph and chi circulation around the neck and shoulders, and sometimes elsewhere on the body. These trapezoid muscles work overtime to hold up the 12 pound “bowling ball” that we carry around all day. And when it is hanging over a computer or a steering wheel, the head is more the equivalent of 20 lbs…Cupping and Gua Sah to the rescue!

Ancestral Soul at Solstice Part III

road-homeOur ancestral soul at Solstice time is geared for extra holiday joy but sometimes instead we plummet from seasonal stress, especially after the holiday. Is there a solution–even one for the whole year?

As described in my article in the Malibu Chronicle, (”Staying Balanced at the Winter Solstice, p. 49,) if our emotions are volatile and easily sabotaged, then we can look for cause and effect factors inside and out.  There IS an emotional vortex in our middle section that has the potential of being boiled into a block–even though this area is called ”the solar plexus” and should have sunshine flowing out of it.  Instead, this pressure cooker boiling in our middle causes heat to get trapped above.

This heat rising in the body is one of the main causal imbalances that an acupuncturist addresses. We can break up this quagmire to alleviate this polarizing of our energy.  Sometimes it is just shut down–a dormant area, stifling the normal circulation of blood and chi through the body.

This dam of emotional plaque now results in a hot head and cold feet. Hot upper symptoms are headaches, heartburn, tight muscles, and even ringing in the ears, as the excess energy is under pressure above. Meanwhile below we might have low back pain, weak flaccid intestines, low libido, varicose veins, and cold feet. Heartburn, acid reflux or a hiatal hernia occur right in the emotional center.

In Part IV  I will discuss how we can empty out the psychic plaque of our personal drama and be ready to refuel with these special cosmic energies pouring in all the time but especially at the Solstice season. Our solar plexus can again be a SUN radiating out to all parts of the body and out to others. The sunny chakra that knits the upper and lower halves back together. A bright solstice solar light to the world! Let’s drink to that Holiday Cheer and an amazing New Year!

One formula for Menstruation and Menopause Symptoms?

Lilith RossettiIs it possible to find a single powerful formula for women in general for menstruation and menopause symptoms?  Something to cover most of the fluctuations that can occur in the intricate female system?  The Longevity Pure Medicine line has just such an all-round tonic for women: Female Essential. One important ingredient is Sepia, possibly the most famous female remedy in Homeopathic literature.  For over 100 years, homeopaths have extracted Sepia from the ink of cuttlefish to treat depression, menstrual problems, and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes.

A tiny Sepia pill would typically contain 1/100th of a molecule of cuttlefish ink. Just like the effects of splitting the atom, this breaking down of the substance unleashes the atom’s energetic potential without the dense material substance. The discovery of this homeopathic extraction process became the basis for the development of  innoculations…the birth of vaccines.

Female EssentialA miraculous substance, Sepia is known to improve overall mood and eliminate irritability, especially useful during times of PMS or menopause. Practitioners may use the tincture for bodily aches, infertility, libido loss, or exhaustion.

Female Essentials helps with monthly PMS and cramps.  It seems to address most female issues by balancing heat and cold fluctuations.  If chemicals release MORE power when they are reduced, then they become more innately deep acting—not just a band aid to cover the underlying problem, like most conventional medicines.  For $10., a tube lasts forever.  Check it out!

Health for Sex; Sex for Health

Health for Sex; Sex for Health was the title of a lecture I gave at the Los Angeles Conscious Life Expo two years ago.  With a title like that, I had people sitting in the aisles to hear this subject!  We’ve all learned that a healthy mind and body can improve all human activities, including sex. But studies show that sex in turn can improve one’s overall health. Since the right use of sexual energy is such a critical health factor, this has to be included among the many topics in my upcoming workshop next Sunday 11/2: Anti-Aging Lifestyle: How to Turn On All the Brains of the Body for Inner and Outer Rejuvenation.

Hindi loversGiven the increasing stresses in our lives, many women and men at fifty are already burned-out and feeling non-sexual, non-orgasmic; feeling over the hill and throwing in the towel.  Often, they are also sluggish, achey, depressed and a bit overweight.

On the other hand, many women in their fifties and sixties are reporting ever-increasing numbers of orgasms and sexual responsiveness in general. Why is that?  Why a cumulative effect? Are they simply feeling more entitled to pleasure than their mothers did? Exercising more than their mothers? Less hampered by birth control than their younger selves? Refusing to pay attention to their numerical age? Listening to the wisdom that ever-unfolding age brings—that joy can be truly ever-expanding? That Growth actually DOES continue–if rightly attended to??

There are many reports on the overall benefits of sexual arousal for the human body. Vaginal stimulation has been found to counteract chronic back and leg pain, reduce menstrual cramps, arthritic pain, and in some cases even headaches. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that men who ejaculated frequently (at least 21 times a month) were less likely to get prostate cancer. Joseph J. Pinzone, MD sites a landmark study on how sexual intercourse specifically (not masturbation) lowered systolic blood pressure.  The list goes on…

254106_233249770025466_6994835_nI will share methods for propagating the feel-good hormones that have been suppressed in our systems for so long–feeling good as a prelude to sex or for its own sake. Every organ takes part in the sexual experience, and the polimorphous pleasure receptors in every cell can be further activated–with or without sex.  The currents up the spine can get fully charged.  When we increase our base-line of wellbeing then we can enhance our energies, including sexual energies.  The feedback loop that these energies create has an exponential effect.  Everything gets enhanced!  And when we handle sexual energy intelligently and intentionally, we create more psychic and physiological force.

Lots to explore next Sunday.  Come join us!  At the Village Church, 343 Church Lane, between Montana & Sunset just west of the 405 Freeway. 1:30–4:30.  Refreshments.  $20.  RSVP and Reserve your seat by clicking on this website calendar page.

Our Genes affected by Epigenes

Our genes affected by epigenes?  Who knew? I was rereading an earlier blog I’d posted about Angelina Jolie’s choice to remove her breasts prophylactically because of her trusting the bad advice that her compromised genes should dictate this action.  I felt that some of the info deserved repeating. Here is the gist of the article by Sayer Ji at GreenMedInfo.com in my previous blog that, despite so-called ‘evidence-based medicine,’ acknowledges the most current evidence of genetics.

Christiane's statueBasically he states that, following the completion of the first draft of the entire human genome in 2000, the central dogma of molecular biology – that our DNA controls protein expression, and therefore disease risk – was disproved. Our genome was found to contain roughly only 20,000 genetic instructions  – not even enough to account for the 100,000 proteins in the human body!”

As a result, we now know that the field of epigenetics or ”Junk genes,” is much more important than genes.  Epigenetic factors are influenced by a combination of nutrition, lifestyle factors, environmental exposures, and psychospiritual states that feed back into our physiology.  They constitute as high as 95% of what determines any disease risk. In fact, ”even the psychological trauma associated with being diagnosed with cancer is enough to drive a malignancy via adrenaline-mediated multi-drug resistance, and according to a recent NEJM study, leads up to a 26-fold increased risk of heart-related deaths in the seven days following diagnosis.”  ETH Zurich. “Epigenetics: DNA Isn’t Everything.” ScienceDaily. ScienceDaily, 13 April 2009. . In other words, our mental/emotional state can influence directly the physiological activity of healthy and cancerous cells, more than our inherited ancestral genes.

Circulation problems need not be inevitable

Circulation problems need not be chronic nor inevitable.  Yes, sluggish blood flow is the underlying cause of pain and most internal problems.  Blood and lymph stasis is a recurring reason why we bipeds do not always function very well, or feel very well.  How can it pump upstream against the force of gravity? How can the feet withstand the pressure of our entire body on those few square inches?  And the lymph has no pump at all.  Movement is essential to keep it flowing.

At a certain age, powerful herbal tonics are imperative to help the arterial walls from getting blocked.   There are excellent remedies that can stimulate the flow of these energizing fluids–both blood and lymph.  Herbal and Homeopathic remedies work wonders to support this system.   Ischemia is an insufficient supply of blood to any organ, usually due to internal congealed phlegm build-up, and cooling sluggish  microcirculation.  Instead of resorting to drugs with side effects, consider an herbal tonic alone or in addition, that goes deeper to undo blockages.  To review the action of the heart, check out this link:

blood-cells.jpgI depend on formulas from many companies but my current favorite is Evergreen Herbs.  Their webinar on the fifty most popular conventional drugs listed each corollary Chinese formula that achieved a deeper, superior effect with no side effects.  Their formula called ”Circulation” invigorates the heart muscle and deals with blood clots, embolisms, peripheral neuropathy, and general cerebral and and coronary circulation.  It is only available through a practitioner but it provides great support to the Acupuncture treatments.  Having a daily support that cools or warms, clears, strengthens, and balances—is invaluable.

How Acupuncture for Low Back Pain helps Organs too!

Male Back pointsMost people are unaware of how Acupuncture for low back pain helps internal organs too.  Its well known success for back pain usually goes much deeper than merely achieving pain relief.  The ramifications are much greater.  When I apply a treatment of acupuncture with heat, special massage techniques and Electromagnetic Stimulation [PEMF]—all effective for regenerating muscle and nerve tissue, I often see improvements in the kidneys, bladder, metabolism and intestines as well.  For instance, many people report fewer sleep interruptions for urination during the night.  Some have noticed improvements in prostate function, erectile dysfunction or frigidity, and in intestinal and menstrual issues.

Sciatic-nerve-ppic1When our back aches, it is often the cause AND result of various other underlying problems in the body.  While inflammation can migrate to other joints and limbs, it often gravitates to the lower spine–one of our most vulnerable spots.  And yet this area is a vital command center for our adrenal power activation.  Therefore, whether I use laser, PEMF, infrared heat or acupuncture needles,  I find treating the  arthritic build-up or injury of the vertebrae, nerves, and spinal fluid, will also affect the neighboring organs.

The acupuncture meridian channels have all the qualities of a laser beam. In fact they ARE laser beams. So manipulating acupuncture points can have ramifications in the 3-dimensional body and beyond… Multi-tasking at its best!

Miracles for Dogs with Lasers and Electromagnetic Field Stim (PEMF)

Can Lasers and Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Stim [PEMF] do miracles on dogs? In my experience they have consistently proven to transform animals. I have worked with cats, dogs, and dairy cows with Acupuncture and they responded positively. Now recently I have treated three dogs with PEMF and Laser only, with amazing results.

The most dramatic change occurred in a 9 yr. old, fifty-pound Staffordshire Pitbull named Bleu, who had suddenly developed paralysis in his hind legs due to a lesion on his spine revealed by a veterinary MRI. For almost two months he dragged his bottom behind him until he was bloody. The Veterinarian offered expensive diagnostic tests but had no solution for Bleu’s condition. He advised putting him down. But in five visits with me, Bleu was walking. The first visit he immediately improved his incontinence…; after visit #2 he stood up; fourth visit had him walking albeit wobbly, and fifth visit he was on his way. Now the report is that he is running and back to his old self. The short video shows his progress through the treatments.

Rusty, a large 12 yr. old Rotweiler-Golden Retriever, was diagnosed with a tumor in his intestine. He became lethargic, refused to eat and was plagued with vomiting and diarrhea. With every treatment he continues to keep things down better and regain his appetite and his spirit. Bear, a 12 yr. old Huskie-Chow, was becoming an old dog with severe arthritis and old dog habits–stiff and lethargic. Immediately after each of his three treatments so far he seems to regain more and more of his movement and his spunky, interactive personality.

The electromagnetic field stimulator reestablishes the animals’ own electromagnetic fields exactly as it does for human beings. Just as an MRI uses magnetic resonance to diagnose, so the same magnetic properties can apply to curative treatment. And the laser has the ability to penetrate the skin to reorganize the normal functioning of the organism. The treatments are comfortable and speedy so that animals are willing patients for repeated treatments. And their positive response cannot be due to mind over matter! There is no placebo effect here. Thy are not expecting anything. They simply get better! Please use the comment button and share your feedback and responses with me and my readers.

Sarcopenia–The Mystery of Muscle Loss

Sarcopenia–The mystery of muscle loss is no mystery. Just look at our sedentary life styles.  Even thin people are often found to be flabby! Why is it that our population seems to either gain excess weight or lose excess weight as they go through their middle years? Don’t the opposing influences ever cancel out and leave us happily in the middle??

It turns out that we have to exercise even if we do not tend to put weight on.  Studies indicate that adults who do not strength train LOSE on average at least a half pound of lean muscle tissue each year starting at about age 25. This process of muscle tissue loss is called ”sarcopenia.” The more lean muscle you retain, the more fat and calories you burn all day and night.  Therefore, less muscle means a slower metabolism; more muscle means a faster metabolism.  This muscle loss and its effect on metabolism is one reason why most people do gain weight as they get older.  Our assimilation of caloric energy–virtually our digestion–really occurs in our muscles. Strength training not only halts this lean muscle loss but can reverse the process and make your body biologically younger.  Now they tell us that exercise also helps our brain cognition and prevents depression.  So enjoy those endorphins as you let your body play!

Professionals claim that all you need are two 20 minute slow-motion strength training sessions a week.  But for those  who can’t afford the time and funds for gyms or personal trainers, here is a link for simple exercises that can be performed at home for no cost:   http://www.moneycrashers.com/strength-training-exercises-women/

Strength Training Exercises

All these exercises work one or more of your muscle groups, which improves your functional strength while also increasing your metabolism. By improving your functional strength, you’ll have a greater ability to do simple tasks, such as lifting heavy boxes or moving furniture. Try doing four or more of these exercises three times a week to start.

1. Overhead Squat

  • Item Needed: A weighted gym bag
  • Muscles Worked: The overhead squat is one of the best full body exercises you can do. It mainly targets the quads, but also targets the glutes, hamstrings, lower back, shoulders, triceps, and the abdominal muscles.

How to Do It
Stand up and hold the gym bag above your head, gripping the bag at the ends. You will hold this position during the entire exercise. Keep your arms straight. Your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder width.

Next, thrust your hips back and begin bending your knees for the squat. Keep your back straight at all times – resist the urge to slouch. Continue descending downward, envisioning that you’re trying to sit back into a small chair.

Once your hips are parallel to your knee joints, hold the position for one second. Now, rise back up into the starting position. This is one repetition. To build strength, aim for a minimum of 5 repetitions, doing no more than 12. Once you can easily do 12 repetitions, it’s time to add weight to the bag.

If you’re unable to bring your hips parallel to your knee joints, start with wall squats to build up strength. Otherwise, not going fully parallel can place stress on your joints and injure your knees. I didn’t go parallel when I first started weightlifting and seriously injured my knee. In fact, I had to lay off lifting for two months to allow it to heal.

2. Deadlift

  • Item Needed: A weighted gym bag
  • Muscles Worked: The deadlift is arguably one of the best lower body exercises, working most of the back, glutes, hamstrings, and quads.

How to Do It
Place the gym bag in front of your feet. Stand behind with both feet close to each other. Bend your knees while pushing your hips back to grab the ends of the gym bag. Make sure your back is straight.

Now bring yourself into a standing position by simultaneously straightening your back and legs. Remember to keep your back straight – do not let it slouch, as this can cause injury. Once assuming the straight stance, stick your chest out and contract your shoulder blades. This is one repetition. Do at least five repetitions to build strength and muscle. Once you can do these repetitions easily, add weight to the bag.

These are just two of their listed strength training exercises.  I personally find that gardening and landscaping gives me a good workout and lots of satisfaction.  But actual exercises are irreplaceable and make me stronger for that garden work.  Try it!

My Media Gig about Cupping for Neck Tension & Hollywood Stars

I must share my media gig about Cupping away neck tension and its usage by Hollywood stars…  “Cupping,” is the term for an ancient technique used in Chinese medicine to eliminate the stagnant blood circulation that typically occurs around the neck and shoulders. Seems the sighting of Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston with cupping marks on their backs has put this ancient practice in the news…  A small glass jar with a vacuum inside creates a suction that pulls this stuck blood to the surface capillaries. From there this old blood can easily return to the heart to be re-oxygenated so that a more active flow of blood circulation can be restored. (Here Jennifer’s marks have faded from red to white.) Other partakers are Victoria Beckham and Jessica Simpson.

I was recently interviewed by Agence France Press to do a demonstration of this procedure for their global media outreach. You can view it at this link: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/videonetwork/2571529145001/Remedy-of-the-Stars-Cupping-Leaves-Its-Mark-on-Hollywood.                                    I did two versions with different patients, one in French for some markets, and one in English that has already shown in countries all over the world. A French friend caught it on TV in Brazil.  When legendary actress Lee Grant was about to win an Oscar for “Shampoo,”  she declined this treatment right before the gala so as NOT to have marks.  We did it the day AFTER… It took 40 years for it to become fashionable!

What did not get included in the segment was my contrasting cupping with another similar technique called Gua Sah, a friction rub that achieves the same results with some added benefits. (The marks resulting from this style are visible on my patient in the clip.) In my estimation, it is more comfortable, more controllable, less labor intensive, and more thorough.  In my opinion, the second example of cupping performed by another acupuncturist shown in the video is an example of extreme over-the-top treatment that is potentially uncomfortable and excessive. Temporary raised red welts resulted from the strong degree of suction.

And when it is hanging over a computer or a steering wheel, the head is more the equivalent of 20 lbs. Now with the trend among young people to slump forward, they will have even worse problems as they age.

This pandemic of poor posture across many groups and generations has become a pet peeve for me. I am on a crusade to help individuals learn to let their head ‘float’ evenly between the front and back by Leading with the Heart.  Pulling in the chin and pushing out the chest. Immediately one feels a relaxation of the neck muscles and a tingling in the nerves as they start to breathe. Meanwhile, one feels a new pressure in the chest and sternum muscles as they begin to work.  It is a good sign that they are engaging.  This constitutes a light work-out for these forgotten muscles, an isometric action that makes one appear taller, leaner, and more confident. I implore patients to let Vanity work for them! Work it—and your neck and shoulders will feel sooo grateful!

Furthermore, this area of the body is in the crossfire between brain and emotional center so there are tremendous psychological repercussions to creat tension there.  Even these actresses with great posture carry literally the weight of the world–and its attention—on their shoulders. Even for them– some form of emotional tension while working their sometimes stressful craft and maintaining careers. Here are two eye-opening links about them and cupping:

Medical Pollution: Poli-Meds that Kill

Drugs

Medical Polution: Poli-Meds that Kill

Medical polution and poli-meds that kill is a problem that needs addressing. According to OffGridSurvival.com, “One out of every  5 U.S. adults is taking at least one behavioral pharmaceutical drug and more than one in four women is taking at least one mood altering medication.”  Dr. Mercola writes, “Death by medicine is a 21st-century epidemic, and America’s “war on drugs” is clearly directed at the wrong enemy!”

Prescription drugs are now killing far more people than illegal drugs.  An analysis of recently released data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by the Los Angeles Times revealed that deaths from prescription drug use are increasing. The Times analysis of 2009 death statistics, the most recent available, showed: For the first time ever in the US, more people were killed by drugs than motor vehicle accidents.  37,485 people died from prescribed drugs. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and more than tripled among people aged 50 to 69.

There are few research studies on the effects of multiple drugs on a single individual.  The specialists who each prescribe for you are in different departments, different buildings.  Do your specialists confer with one another about your case? One gives an antacid; another gives a blood pressure medication; yet another an anti-depressant. Throw in an allergy medication.  How ’bout a steroid? An antibiotic?  As we all know, there is nothing unusual about such a concoction. Maybe you need another few pills to counteract ALL the combined side effects.  Now you might need a laxative for the drug-induced constipation, or something for the drug induced lethargy and lack of libido.

Recently I took a webinar featuring the fifty most popular drugs contrasted with Chinese herbal formulas for addressing the most common medical issues.  Time-tested formulas to replace the beta-blocker, the antacid, the steroid, the antibiotic, and the anti-depressant.  These carefully crafted formulas might act slower but have virtually none of the side effects of prescribed drugs.

The best thing about these formulas is that they do more than just MASK the symptom and numb the pain—an action which often drives the problem deeper.  Instead, the REMEDY is what goes deep to get to the bottom of the problem, working on the underlying causes. You could also call it ‘working upstream,’ getting at the cause of inflammation before it differentiates into arthritis, or a stroke, or any other possible inflammatory conditions.

I have had good results with patients going this route. A 12-year sinus infection resistant to antibiotics—Gone! Smell and taste returned. And in this current climate of HMO and Insurance company control of doctors and medical procedures, the ability to probe deeper has been removed even further from the doctor’s hands.  I’m told that an MRI MUST preceed a simple appointment with the physical therapist who might be able to work out that kink before it needs anything else.

Let vanity work for you.  Multiple medications confuse the body and make it age faster. Find an informed doctor who uses what is called “functional medicine.”  If the energy body underlying all the physical organs is not addressed, and if the mind and emotions are not exercised and healed, then it is like making a cake lacking crucial ingredients.  We are dealing with human bodies programmed over 30,000 years to have adequate exercise, clean air and lots of time between hunting raids and food gathering for simple relaxation. We must turn to Nature for cures and equanimity…!

How Acupuncture Works for Headaches

CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT THE CAUSE OF A HEADACHE? Usually! All bodily pains are necessary signals telling us that an imbalance has occurred somewhere in the physical-emotional body. Headaches rarely originate from problems in the head itself. They usually only occur in the thin sheet of muscle just under the scalp. An acupuncturist can diagnose the headache and determine which organ is causing it.

Immediate relief can come from breaking up the muscle spasms in the head and neck. This is achieved by: 1) Altering the electric charge in the nerves (discharging). 2) Sedating the pain sensors. 3) Using massage and gentle heat to open up the blocked circulation.

For a TENSION HEADACHE, painless needles are placed in the shoulders and neck area in order to release muscle spasms and stimulate an anti-inflammatory response. (Needle-less treatment is also available). Those muscles are holding up our 12 pound bowling ball head which, hanging forward over a desk or steering wheel, is actually equivalent to 20 lb.! Sine we don’t stand up straight allowing the chest muscles to hold it up, the trapezius gets overworked.

A special friction rub–“Gwa Sah” removes the old stagnant blood that pools in the muscle tissue causing that familiar achiness, tightness, and pressure on the affected vertebral nerves. As fresh blood flows in, this massage technique often produces immediate dramatic relief, creating a drainage, relieving the pounding arteries of the head. Along with pain relief, patients often report feeling sharper mentally and enjoying more satisfying sleep.

If any one of the following co-factors exist—ARTHRITIS, damaged HERNIATED DISCS, or BONE SPURS, this treatment will also restore oxygen to the tissue, remove toxins, and begin to dissolve the mineral buildup. One of the contributing factors in arthritis (and headaches) is FAULTY METABOLISM. Something is wrong when the minerals we ingest go and deposit themselves on our weakest joints instead of inside our bones and muscles. Accordingly, certain acupuncture points can improve the digestion and assimilation of nutrients in order to rebalance sluggish metabolism (also promoting WEIGHT LOSS). Our aim is to eradicate the systemic chemical basis for arthritis, osteoporosis, and of course, the headache.

MIGRAINES, FOOD ALLERGY HEADACHES, CLUSTER and PMS HEADACHES are caused by imbalances in the hormones, and by toxicity in the major organs, especially the liver, gall bladder and intestines. Based on traditional diagnosis, the acupuncturist stimulates those points on the limbs that relate to the affected organs, and recommends herbal formulas to support the detox and balancing process.

Sometimes the effect is immediate; sometimes it takes a series of treatments to eliminate the cause of the headache. When the deep cause is found, many future worsening conditions are thus avoided. The headache served its purpose to alert us to things under the surface and thus change the course of our lifeline.

Bonnie Raitt and the Raitt Legacy of Graceful Aging

Bonnie Raitt - Gracefully Aging on Brain Body Bliss

Bonnie Raitt – Gracefully Aging

We all know what a treasure Bonnie Raitt is. What a woman–with such a voice, such guitar brilliance, and success over forty years, to then have such humility, appreciation of us out there, such joy in her work, and such immediacy in her presence. She is a goddess…!

At her concert, she was celebrating the beauty of the Greek Theater and the towering trees encircling us. The Greek opened on Sept. 29th, 1929 eighty-three years ago, just weeks before the stock market crash. It was the perfect venue for Bonnie’s intimate performance for 5800 fans.
Bonnie chatted a lot and spoke of her Dad, John Raitt who was still singing his hits til age 88. She plans to sing and play–with the same hair-do! with a walker if necessary. She hinted it might be a hover craft by then… You can watch and listen to one of her songs from Saturday night:

I’ve always loved how musicians get to age gracefully without too much
flak from the public. Actresses might feel put out to pasture, but Ella Fitzgerald just became more of a legend as she aged, and Eubie Blake played piano til 101. Only the Stones get picked on for being too old– even as they play with the exuberance of an eight-yr old.  Bonnie seemed to revel in her age and her many decades of doing what she loves. She gave birthday wishes to her guitarist: “Sixty Baby! Welcome to the deep end…!”

Her ballads cut deep but then she rocked out with Elvis’ “Big Hunk of Love.” No sense of ‘age appropriateness’ when it comes to music–it is so egalitarian. With these determined aging musicians you usually witness an increase in skill and art. They seem to only get better–like fine wine? Yet it is our generation which is the first to have to ‘grapple’ with the idea of aging since we invented “Youth Culture” and never thought we would ever grow old. Before that, eighteen year olds immediately donned ‘grown up’ clothing and became adults fast. No extended adolescence. So we are all in shock it seems as one or another organ or joint becomes painful. Mortality? What’s that?! Can we maintain a youthful maturity between adolescence and obsolescence? If we cultivate Joy and encourage our playful self, we can keep a grounded spirit ever growing and emanating outwards.

Bonnie comes from a long line of inveterate doers–She played a song
for her late Mother–a pianist and an untiring activist. I was friends
with her Dad John Raitt, the magnetic Broadway & Hollywood musical
star, and his cultivated, accomplished wife Rosemary, on the board of
Pepperdine University. They were both active, attractive octogenarians. After coming for dinner, they took us along to Bonnie’s concert where he stepped out and sang “Oklahoma” and “Oh What a Beautiful Morning”. They didn’t DO ‘aging’; they did LIVING…to the hilt! Their lust for life was contagious to the end of their lives. All the Raitts share a tradition of service and taking care of others, no matter what their age. Bonnie uses her music to promote many causes, especially against nuclear proliferation.

My son Adam, DJ and engineer at KCSN radio, got four tickets for the show. He LOVES Bonnie. Do catch her in concert if you can and hear her new album Slipstream. Bonnie’s prowess on the electric slide guitar garnered her the first signature Fender guitar named after a woman. That voice that can change from husky, smokey, to a ringing bell. Sultry and soft, she is a real steel Magnolia…

Skin Health and Anti-Aging

In our last discussion about skin health, I mentioned how Acupuncture or Acupuressure can be performed on the face and body to detoxify, increase local circulation, and stimulate collagen and elastin. This in turn helps to fill out lines and give firmness to the skin for a healthy complexion. Our muscles become deflated with age, losing their moisture— like a dry sponge. Acupuncture restores the natural internal irrigation so the ‘sponge’ is plumped up again and wrinkles disappear. And the needles are so thin that they  are generally painless.

When we start to transform the face, we approach it locally and systemically.  We would treat the points for any off-balance organs (i.e. kidneys, liver) that leave traces on the face such as bags or lines. Then treatment might also include addressing facial muscles directly because the electro-stimulation of the skin’s underlying muscle tissue re-establishes the normal electric charge/discharge cycle. This enlivens the tissue. Some muscles are too charged up and in spasm; others are flaccid. We want to firm up and smooth them all. Finally, nerves and fluids are freed up and can circulate easily as they did in youth. A 1996 report in the International Journal of Clinical Acupuncture reported that among 300 cases treated with Cosmetic Acupuncture, 90% had marked effects with one course of treatment. The effects include more moisturized, softer skin, improved elasticity, skin tone, and overall rejuvenation. For true anti-aging, we don’t just LOOK better—we actually ARE better—as the skin functions better in its job to eliminate toxins. How wonderful that age can bring wisdom AND renewed beauty!
