Ancestral Soul at Solstice Part III

road-homeOur ancestral soul at Solstice time is geared for extra holiday joy but sometimes instead we plummet from seasonal stress, especially after the holiday. Is there a solution–even one for the whole year?

As described in my article in the Malibu Chronicle, (”Staying Balanced at the Winter Solstice, p. 49,) if our emotions are volatile and easily sabotaged, then we can look for cause and effect factors inside and out.  There IS an emotional vortex in our middle section that has the potential of being boiled into a block–even though this area is called ”the solar plexus” and should have sunshine flowing out of it.  Instead, this pressure cooker boiling in our middle causes heat to get trapped above.

This heat rising in the body is one of the main causal imbalances that an acupuncturist addresses. We can break up this quagmire to alleviate this polarizing of our energy.  Sometimes it is just shut down–a dormant area, stifling the normal circulation of blood and chi through the body.

This dam of emotional plaque now results in a hot head and cold feet. Hot upper symptoms are headaches, heartburn, tight muscles, and even ringing in the ears, as the excess energy is under pressure above. Meanwhile below we might have low back pain, weak flaccid intestines, low libido, varicose veins, and cold feet. Heartburn, acid reflux or a hiatal hernia occur right in the emotional center.

In Part IV  I will discuss how we can empty out the psychic plaque of our personal drama and be ready to refuel with these special cosmic energies pouring in all the time but especially at the Solstice season. Our solar plexus can again be a SUN radiating out to all parts of the body and out to others. The sunny chakra that knits the upper and lower halves back together. A bright solstice solar light to the world! Let’s drink to that Holiday Cheer and an amazing New Year!

Massage with Acupuncture Treatment

Woman with enhanced spinal column, rear view (Digital Composite)

Why do I always include massage with acupuncture treatment? The combination of Acupuncture and Massage can accomplish more together than either separately to breathe life back into muscles. While normal muscles are able to contract and relax without restrictions, over the years they can become gummed up [thixotropy]. Without the ability to contract freely, the muscle becomes weak, tight, and often painful. Overused muscles become chronically shorter, a result of fibrous scar tissue.  This then entraps the nerves running through the muscles, causing numbness and/or tingling sensations.

I apply several types of massage before and after needle or magnet application. While Acupuncture works directly on the laser beam-like meridians, GENTLE MASSAGE can nudge these muscles to let go and breathe again. My technique is to slowly allow the muscle to open up at its own speed without imposing painful pressure. Gradually I move into deeper massage that can access underlying muscle layers.  I believe that ”Hurts Good” is far enough and I always listen to the patient’s feedback.

Stressed muscles can block nutrients and oxygen from getting to where they need to go, and this will cause inflammation that allows toxins to build up in your muscle tissue, a feedback loop that contributes to yet more pain and stress. The combination of Massage and Acupuncture breaks up and releases the built-up toxins. With the toxins released, blood and oxygen can circulate as they should through one’s body.  Feel good endorphins are released, dopamine relaxes the brain, and the muscles then crave activity and exercise–as they did when they were part of a younger body!  Start the ball rolling!

Korean Hand Acupuncture Rules the Brain

Did you know that your hand rules the brain, according to Korean Hand Acupuncture? Our human body never fails to impress us with its inner intelligence and its internal communication system. The ear, hand, and foot are each microcosms of the entire body. Each can serve as a keyboard to program and affect any other part of the body.  Hand points can reveal real time information about tHomonculushe entire body and is a holographic record of the whole.

Hand acupuncture has developed due to the large role that the hand plays in the brain. This picture illustrates how the brain experiences the hands and mouth. The particularly high concentration of neurological connections between the hands and the brain means that the hand is the most able of all body parts to activate the brain. The brain will follow its direction and relay its neural messages to the body.

motor cortexHere is an image of the cortical homunculus, a physical representation of the human body, located within the brain. The amount of brain cortex devoted to any given body region is proportional to how richly innervated that region is, not to the region’s physical size. Thus the brain devotes disproportionately larger space to the hands (grabbing, defending, feeding, working) and mouth (talking, breathing, eating, sucking).

Acupuncturist Dr. Tae Woo Yoo, OMD, Ph.D., of South Korea discovered the reflex potential of the hand and laid out the holographic mapping of the body on the hands.

hand stim cropFor example, in Korean Hand Therapy [KHT], the little finger corresponds to the leg. Therefore, any leg problem will have a corresponding tender point on the little finger. Stimulation of that point on the pinkie will give pain relief and healing support on the leg. The most effect stimulation is the placement of a teeny magnet taped over that point, staying in place for at least 30 minutes. The treatment is simple, painless, fast acting, and easily repeated until the condition is resolved. Hands on!

How Acupuncture for Low Back Pain helps Organs too!

Male Back pointsMost people are unaware of how Acupuncture for low back pain helps internal organs too.  Its well known success for back pain usually goes much deeper than merely achieving pain relief.  The ramifications are much greater.  When I apply a treatment of acupuncture with heat, special massage techniques and Electromagnetic Stimulation [PEMF]—all effective for regenerating muscle and nerve tissue, I often see improvements in the kidneys, bladder, metabolism and intestines as well.  For instance, many people report fewer sleep interruptions for urination during the night.  Some have noticed improvements in prostate function, erectile dysfunction or frigidity, and in intestinal and menstrual issues.

Sciatic-nerve-ppic1When our back aches, it is often the cause AND result of various other underlying problems in the body.  While inflammation can migrate to other joints and limbs, it often gravitates to the lower spine–one of our most vulnerable spots.  And yet this area is a vital command center for our adrenal power activation.  Therefore, whether I use laser, PEMF, infrared heat or acupuncture needles,  I find treating the  arthritic build-up or injury of the vertebrae, nerves, and spinal fluid, will also affect the neighboring organs.

The acupuncture meridian channels have all the qualities of a laser beam. In fact they ARE laser beams. So manipulating acupuncture points can have ramifications in the 3-dimensional body and beyond… Multi-tasking at its best!

Veterans PTSD Treatment

Veterans Acupuncture for Veterans with PTSD: How can we make acupuncture and meditation more available to our military Veterans? If they are returning with severe trauma and pain, we need to address this problem before it worsens.

As a pioneer acupuncturist in this country, I have aided many Veterans suffering from PTSD through my multi-pronged Veterans PTSD Project: a therapy program for releasing deep-seated anxiety and depression. It includes:

  • Acupuncture treatment for physical and emotional pain.
  • Deep-state endorphin release achieved through herbs and pharmaceuticals, specialized massage, breathing techniques, verbal programming, and other modalities.
  • The powerful Pulsed Electro-Magnetic Field Stimulator that can regenerate cell tissue anywhere in the brain or body, FDA approved for depression.
  • My  Cellular Meditation VETERANS STRESS RELIEF audio CDs. Two STRESS RELIEF recorded segments are available for listening for free on this blog site www.BrainbodyBliss.com.

Acupuncture or massage point combinations can open up blocked neural centers, waking up the right bio-electrical frequencies.  This can help “teach” traumatized cells how to “unlearn” states of fear and demoralization.  It helps remove physical imbalances such as inflammation, toxicity, pain, brain chemistry imbalance, physical injuries and overall systems blockage.  This treatment affects these issues by helping to break up intracellular energy trauma and revitalize subcellular metabolism.  This impacts the mental and emotional systems as well.

Acupuncture and the Stress Release CDs both address the entire body’s natural, feel-good neuro-hormones to regenerate the proper brain-body connections.  This restores a state of wellbeing and good sleep.

I have lectured twice at the Combat Stress Conference, explaining the science behind the CDs and treatment therapies.  Many Veterans groups are requesting help.  Singer/songwriter Graham Nash has generously contributed, but much more is needed to fill this critical need.  Drug therapy alone does not always go deep enough and often wears off or causes side effects.

We are working toward the opening of a clinical program for Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder located near the West L.A. V.A.  This will help Vets transition to civilian life, helping to eliminate both painful memories and painful conditions.

Cellular Meditation is the full-body form of meditation—made easy. It is about getting endorphins, our own feel-good chemicals into ALL THE CELLS OF THE BODY—by freeing them up, and sensing them from inside.  It is the ‘Feel Good’ form of meditation, easier to do than other meditation practices, while also achieving deeper results.  A version of the double CDs is also available for the general public and the Veterans’ families.

Studies have shown that relaxing meditation techniques increase the feel-good neuro-transmitters that counter mood disorders, such as serotonin, dopamine, and GABA; and beneficial hormones such as DHEA, HGH (human growth hormone), and melatonin for anti-aging and good sleep. Meditation also reduces harmful cortisol produced by stress.

Many Veterans and civilians have benefited from the treatments and these CDs. Our non-profit Earth Harmony Foundation.org receives tax deductible donations from those who want to help our returning soldiers by funding their distribution to many veterans organizations who have requested these CDs.

How Acupuncture Works for Headaches

CAN ACUPUNCTURE TREAT THE CAUSE OF A HEADACHE? Usually! All bodily pains are necessary signals telling us that an imbalance has occurred somewhere in the physical-emotional body. Headaches rarely originate from problems in the head itself. They usually only occur in the thin sheet of muscle just under the scalp. An acupuncturist can diagnose the headache and determine which organ is causing it.

Immediate relief can come from breaking up the muscle spasms in the head and neck. This is achieved by: 1) Altering the electric charge in the nerves (discharging). 2) Sedating the pain sensors. 3) Using massage and gentle heat to open up the blocked circulation.

For a TENSION HEADACHE, painless needles are placed in the shoulders and neck area in order to release muscle spasms and stimulate an anti-inflammatory response. (Needle-less treatment is also available). Those muscles are holding up our 12 pound bowling ball head which, hanging forward over a desk or steering wheel, is actually equivalent to 20 lb.! Sine we don’t stand up straight allowing the chest muscles to hold it up, the trapezius gets overworked.

A special friction rub–“Gwa Sah” removes the old stagnant blood that pools in the muscle tissue causing that familiar achiness, tightness, and pressure on the affected vertebral nerves. As fresh blood flows in, this massage technique often produces immediate dramatic relief, creating a drainage, relieving the pounding arteries of the head. Along with pain relief, patients often report feeling sharper mentally and enjoying more satisfying sleep.

If any one of the following co-factors exist—ARTHRITIS, damaged HERNIATED DISCS, or BONE SPURS, this treatment will also restore oxygen to the tissue, remove toxins, and begin to dissolve the mineral buildup. One of the contributing factors in arthritis (and headaches) is FAULTY METABOLISM. Something is wrong when the minerals we ingest go and deposit themselves on our weakest joints instead of inside our bones and muscles. Accordingly, certain acupuncture points can improve the digestion and assimilation of nutrients in order to rebalance sluggish metabolism (also promoting WEIGHT LOSS). Our aim is to eradicate the systemic chemical basis for arthritis, osteoporosis, and of course, the headache.

MIGRAINES, FOOD ALLERGY HEADACHES, CLUSTER and PMS HEADACHES are caused by imbalances in the hormones, and by toxicity in the major organs, especially the liver, gall bladder and intestines. Based on traditional diagnosis, the acupuncturist stimulates those points on the limbs that relate to the affected organs, and recommends herbal formulas to support the detox and balancing process.

Sometimes the effect is immediate; sometimes it takes a series of treatments to eliminate the cause of the headache. When the deep cause is found, many future worsening conditions are thus avoided. The headache served its purpose to alert us to things under the surface and thus change the course of our lifeline.

Please share your experiences and questions–I invite comments and feedback!

Acupuncture and PEMF for Weight Loss

When our body gets sluggish, gains weight, and loses its ability to transform calories into usable power, Acupuncture can enhance metabolism to burn more fat. It also reduces appetite, detoxifies the digestive system, reduces cravings and addictions, and improves circulation and energy.

Research  supports the use of Acupuncture for weight loss:A 2003 study published in The Journal of Medical Acupuncture found that participants receiving acupuncture lost more than three times more weight than the control group.

In a study conducted by the University of Adelaide in Australia in 1998, 95 percent of the participants receiving electro-stimulation on acupuncture points reported appetite suppression. The results showed that the acupuncture group was more likely to experience a reduced appetite and to lose weight than the control group.

An imbalance in the pancreas and the liver leads to fatigue, slow metabolism, water retention, loose stool, and a feeling of heaviness and the “triggers” that lead to cravings and compulsive eating.

Due to emotional stress.
In Chinese medicine each major organ has it own related emotion. Excessive grief damages the lungs, excessive worry–the liver, obsessive thinking and over eating damages the spleen, and excessive fear damages the kidneys. When a patient has extended depression, anxiety or other emotional stress, this damages the spirits and eventually destroys the balanced relationships of the five major organ system. The emotional obstruction results in overeating from stress and further disables the transformation and transportation of body and food essence into usable energy. Then the person feels sluggish and obesity occurs. Meditation can support the acupuncture treatments.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture and TCM have been shown to have an effect on the function of the nervous, endocrine, and digestive systems, food cravings, and metabolism. All of which can help to energize the body, maximize the absorption of nutrients, regulate elimination, control overeating, suppress the appetite, and reduce anxiety.

Ear Points  are a micro-system of points relating to all major organs and body parts that particularly affect brain chemistry.

Most patients report a marked decline in appetite and cravings with acupuncture alone but herbs, healing foods, and exercises can definitely enhance the efficacy of the treatments. For treatment or more information, contact me at drKathleen@brainbodybliss.com.

Veterans and PTSD

PTSD has been known by different labels in past wars. In the Civil War, it was called “Soldier’s Heart.” There is an excellent organization by that name on the East Coast which helps Veteran sufferers.  In World War II, they called it “Shell Shock.”  Finally, today PTSD is considered an actual disease syndrome.  It is pandemic among our returning warriors and we need to address this problem.  Drugs can give temporary relief but they are not the final answer.  A recent New York Times article attests to the downside of such pharmaceutical approaches.  We need to provide other modalities and therapies.

“Stress Release for Veterans” CDs I and II is a self-help adjunct to conventional and complementary approaches.  It provides a whole developmental track for the healing process because the relaxation affirmations do sink into the psyche upon repeated listening.  It is clear common sense and cognitive & behavioral advice to help individuals with PTSD to recognize and release trauma-related thoughts and beliefs.

There are many ways for the conscious mind to access and modify depressed or anxious states.  Sufferers see the relationships between thoughts and feelings and can practice new ways of perceiving their situation.  They learn to recognize any negative self-talk and the triggers that set off bad feelings and memories. Deeper self-observation exposes their “hot buttons.” Most of all, they connect with their entire body’s network of feel-good hormones until a new baseline of wellbeing pervades their mental and emotional outlook.

When coupled with acupuncture, there is a huge shift possible.  Acupuncture enduces the relaxing endorphins, dopamine and seratonin.  In the graphic below, we see the dopamine jumping across and binding to receptors and then returning to the original neuron through the uptake pump. Veterans with PTSD improve considerably.

The PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Stimulator has also been shown to affect mental and emotional imbalances.  The Mayo Clinic was the first U.S. medical facility to study PEMF in 2002, and offered it for treatment after FDA approval was granted in 2008.  Columbia Univ. Dept. of Psychology has done a study on PEMF and depersonalization disorder (DPD).  Cedars Sinai did a depression study at the Thalian Mental Health Center in 1998.  The greatest amount of studies  of  PEMF and depression has been done in Israel.

These are all non-invasive modalities that have been shown to treat many conditions without harmful side effects, alone or in conjunction with other conventional remedies.  Acupuncture, PEMF, and stress release meditation can access the deeper roots of energy imbalance so that the recovery is deeper and longer lasting.  The body’s intelligence is tapped and reinforced.  We can then begin to trust the trillions of cells’ brains and emotional centers to reintegrate the Whole of the Body/Mind…

Graham Nash’s Gift to Veterans

Famed singer/songwriter Graham Nash is having an exhibit of his photographic collages– of social/political content– at the Gallery 169 in Santa Monica, at 169 Channel Rd at Chatauqua and PCH. The opening is on September 1st and it will run into October. Graham will donate part of the proceeds to support my Veterans Stress Release CD Project for veterans with PTSD.  I will be donating them to veterans through the Veterans for Peace organization.   Graham has already written an endorsement for my CDs:  “I am against war, but I support efforts like these CDs that support the men and women who are fighting for us.”

Graham is a mensch.

The CDs include practical advice, guided imagery & focused breath sensation to help normalize biochemical imbalances, reprogram negative patterns, release endorphins, achieve emotional readjustment— with innovative self-help exercises to improve focus and wellbeing.  Initially designed for everybody and titled Cellular Meditation, also available, I added material about the military experience to create a separate version for veterans. Two selections are available for listening on my website (currently being updated) CellularMeditation.com.

Cellular Meditation is about getting endorphins, our own feel-good chemicals into ALL THE CELLS–ALL THE BRAINS– OF THE BODY–sensing them from inside via our breath. Since we are 99.9% pure air and energy, we can finally taste our real make-up.  Based on physiology and neurochemistry,  I try to guide the listener to better understand the power we have over our own thoughts and emotions.  Science now validates the conscious mind’s ability to alter neuro-peptides.

The CDs are an adjunct to acupuncture as a program for releasing deep-seated anxiety and depression through a combination of

 1) Acupuncture treatment especially in the ear— an outcropping of the brain, and thus a way to access the brain centers.

2) Pulsed Electro-magnetic Field Stimulator (PEMF) FDA approved for treating depression.

3) Deep-state endorphin release, achieved through herbs, specialized massage, breathing/sensation techniques, verbal programming, and other modalities.      Acupuncture point combinations have been discovered for opening up frozen chakras–stimulating bio-energy frequencies that can help “teach” traumatized cells how to unlearn most dysfunctional reactions and states such as fear, demoralization, inflammation, toxification, and overall systems blockage.  This treatment affects trauma, anxiety and depression, by helping to dissipate intracellular energy trauma and revitalize subcellular metabolism.

More importantly, it is possible to heal ancestral, genetic emotional trauma—the psychic pain that we have inherited from generations of suppression. Genetic studies reveal that we still carry the emotional scars of our forefathers in the DNA of our mitochondria.  This DNA, in contrast to the DNA in our cellular nuclei, is in fact accessible and re-programmable.  This is a huge breakthrough in our understanding of the alterability of our genetic make-up.  (It must be added that we also carry the DNA from a previous era when our ancestors built open cities, not fortresses— and sharing, not conflict, was the order of the day. Will we ever return to that era of abundance for all?

T’is my prayer…

Acupuncture for Addictive Behavior

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for any kind of chemical dependency–creamy desserts, cigarettes or cocaine! Along with herbs and massage, special tuning points on the ear are stimulated because the ear is like a computer touch screen for the brain, an external outcropping through which we can REPROGRAM the BRAIN CENTERS for APPETITE CONTROL, METABOLISM, PAIN, DEPRESSION, and ADDICTION.

The major ear point for this is named Shen Men or “Door of the Spirit,” a point that can open our spirit or emotional center. Acupuncture restores the normal release of ENDORPHINS, the chemicals with receptor sites in every cell which give us a sense of wellbeing. But in the case of a smoker or even a “foodaholic,” these chemicals are “locked up” and dependent on the “fix” (of nicotine, drugs, alcohol, or sugar) in order to be released. When certain points are stimulated, the patient begins to feel a sense of deep relaxation, and the endorphins can begin to be released normally. So he loses that nervous build-up that triggers the need for a cigarette. The chemical addiction is gone.

Acupuncture helps DETOXIFY tars and nicotine. Patients often report “feeling like a new person.” Dr. Kathleen induces the expansive THETA WAVE state for relaxation and deprogramming, which brings heightened receptivity and a deep hypnotic reintegration: the cellular memory of deep sensory peace. Through breathing exercises, we feel alpha and theta waves throughout the body, and the pleasurable sensation of our liquidy, airy protoplasmic molecules.

Lacking this treatment, former smokers will often still crave cigarettes years later, since typically their endorphins were never normalized. So it is important to induce a deep state where NEURO-TRANSMITTERS such as DOPAMINE and SERATONIN are also increased. In that way, the “reward” or “consolation” of smoking, alcohol, overeating and all addictive behavior is totally neutralized and erased from the brain and nervous system.

The body and mind feel clear, up-beat, and free of dependency!
